Although we had a gaflon (a hanging banner), it was time that we had a free flying, awesome group flag!

Having acquired a suitable flag pole and rubbed a good quantity of beeswax into it, it was now time to start work on the flag itself.

The flag would need to display our group heraldry which is :

The Standard! Seal

...so it was time to start with the basics. As the flag would show the same image on both sides, it would require eight large squares, four white and four yellow.

The Standard! Squares1
The Standard! Squares2

...and (as you can see) it is now time to sew on many, many black squares...

I assure you that I am far from a sewing expert!

"From Our LORD And MASTER, SIR FROG, Rat, Ghost and Cat come wonderous things".

If you hadn't guessed, these are the nicknames of myself, Ratty Phill, "Slimer" Matthouse and young Kate. Matthouse earned his nickname by performing a most excellent Slimer from Ghostbusters impersonation! I was forced to make a picture to mark the occasion.

The Standard! Slimer

That fabric could do with being ironed! I seem to recall you spending ages preparing the black squares so it's interesting to see the process. I'm looking forward to seeing how you handled the text, I can imagine that being quite tricky.

The fabric is currently drying after receiving a good wash and scrub to remove construction pencil lines and to generally clean things up a bit. It also flattens the fibres, giving a much smoother fabric that is more likely to catch in the wind. When it is dry, it will be ironed - and the ox heads sewn on.

As to the text: well, flags that were used as battle standards rarely if ever had any writing on them before the Renaissance, and this was pretty much the way things went until around 1700. Any you see from before this would most likely have been hung up in the dining hall and never would hear(s) the sound of clashing blade. So, with that in mind, I am not going to have text on the flag, but never fear: it will be included elsewhere!

An update is due later today!

This is where that phrase comes from! A high standard was a flag being held aloft by brave warriors. The alternative was a lowered standard, as dragged along by weary, defeated troops. So, to be held to a high standard literally means you are being compared to unbeaten, brave soldiery!

Here are the two constructed sides just prior to being washed to improve the fabric and remove the construction lines. Things are now starting to look a bit more like the Fellowship's heraldry:

The Standard! 100_0270

While these were drying in the (shockingly hot) midday sun, I set about making the ox head symbols (picture may be deliberately blurry to increase the excitement):

The Standard! 100_0275

I know took hold of my trusty small shield template. I created this so that I could make small, wooden heraldry shields and keep them all consistent for size and shape. I made and painted one for the top of the standard pole and another three for use on the archery net frame. These need to be touched up slightly, but I think you get the idea:

The Standard! 100_0274

Since I was unable to use the iron today (to remove wrinkles from the flag material) I cannot work further on this project until tomorrow.

Things still to be done:

Make and attach black "frame" to flag edges.
Make and attach black streamer to flag.
Put the wooden parts together, then fly flag.
Prepare for inevitable wedding to Evening Starfish.

So here's the flag! A black border has been added to all sides so that the colours stand out more. A streamer has been added to one corner to catch the wind and make it easier to see the image.

Still to be done:

A small amount of sewing to make it fit more tightly to the pole.
Attach wooden heraldry to top of pole.
Make arrangements for inevitable marriage to Evening Starfish.

I was hoping to get a good shot of the flag unfurled, but there was a distinct lack of zephyrs so I had to lay it out on the grass instead:

The Standard! 100_0310

So here you go. As you can see, it is a two sided flag (as it should be, and the standard's symbol echoes the image of the flag. At some point in the future I may add a small brass fleurs de lys to the very top, but we'll see. Anyway: one finished standard under which we will rally!

What a lovely green lawn you have, I believe the lawn mower has visited recently as well!

On a more relevant note, I like the miniature version at the top of the pole. Everything looks great all together. A very professional-looking job, which I mentioned before. Thumbs Up

I like it, but it looks too new. It needs to see some battle... or clank across it in the mud a few times.

I am awaiting a suitably windy day so that I can get the photo I really want! Alternatively, I will need to eat many, many beans!
