I am beloved of the Guac!

What's everyone's outlook on the upcoming World Cup?

(Translation for our American cleft's: the 'World Cup' is the world championship for football (which you call 'soccer', and yes, we know it's confusing but we had the name first, and ours is actually played with the feet...) held every four years, this year in South Africa (in Africa, you know the continent where they have elephants? No, it's not just south of Mexico...), and actually it's not 'boring', everyone else on the planet actually watches, and yes, it's IS bigger than the Super Bowl...).

The excitement is building here in Brazil.

Ok, in other countries is it Futbol or Football? Just something I've wondered for a while.

Football disinterests me. Entirely.

There are many slack jawed neanderthals locally who are attaching flags to their cars (that cause injury to cyclists and pedestrians), hanging banners from their windows and walking around shouting "EN-GER-LAND!" at each other.

Oh joy.

The flags in the cars irritate me beyond belief. I'm sure you have seen this story:

They make all these arguments but fail to mention that the flags look hideous! Anyone who has flags hanging out of their windows lives in a very tacky house and they should have them ripped down.

What do you mean by other countries? Because I don't know any countries that spell it 'futbol'. But as Wagi said, we had the name first, and in our version you actually use your feet.

Hmmmm, do you mean Soccer World Cup?

IN the land of OZ we call it soccer. Football is what we call rugby:

Actually, in Brazilian Portuguese it's 'futebol' and pronounced "foo-chee-bowl'.

I'm not a big fan myself, generally only watching a match here and there, but pretty much EVERYONE watches the national team, and during Cup matches it can get rather exciting. I recall the last Cup, whenever Brazil made a goal you could hear the noise here downtown sound like thunder, not surprising when about a million and a half people work in my neighborhood. It's a big party here, and Brazilians do know how to throw a party.

They do rather anger me. The woman in that story cares nothing for the people who have to drive along that street - or even that the area that she has strung her shockingly tacky flags across doesn't belong to her!

I know there's not a high level of interest, but here in São Paulo it's about half an hour to Brazil's first match against North Korea and there is total gridlock downtown and large parts of the city as businesses closed early and people are trying to get home or a bar to watch. The noise level already is incredible, not only from the traffic (yes, I'm sure laying on your horn for five minutes makes the cars ahead of you move faster...), but with fireworks and horns as well. In the park across from us the bars and restaurants are packed with big screen TV's outside, a couple blocks away there's huge monitors set up with thousands of people waiting. I hope there is something to cheer about. The sound can be deafening whenever there's a big local game, it's much louder when it's Cup play. I enjoy this more than the match I think!

The world as we know it has moved on. Brazil lost today's match and therefore the World Cup is over. We're all hoping the final is Argentina vs Holland in a no-holds Battle Royal of Smugness, only lock the doors, turn off the lights and shut off the cameras...they'll just bore each other to death without anyone to watch.

If we have that and someone shoves on of those Vuvuzela's up the head of FIFA's arse, the world will be made right.

I'm still hopeful...

Personally since I have no love of Argentina, I approve of his prediction!

The German players on the pitch should chat in English loud enough for the Argentines to hear: "I vant to vacation deyz year at der Foolklanz. I hearz zat dey arez buildingz a beeg new clubz therez fur whenz deyz startz drillingz fur de oilz..."...oh, and hold up posters of Pele pissing on Maradona's 'Hand of God'

I want to be entertained by the match...that should do it

I think we're gonna make it against Germany in the finals!
